A Beautiful Way to Help the Environment.

I met Lucy Hay several years ago at one of the Celtic Trade shows.  I walked into her vendor room and met this lovely young women from North Wales who had the the biggest smile and personality to match.  Armed with enthusiasm she began to share with me her hand printed scarves showcasing her artwork along with several other UK artists who were also her friends.

There before me layed out on the tables were beautiful soft cashmere feel scarves showing artwork depicting highland cows, sheep, other animals, nature, flowers and even a bug or two. (The product was name the UK gift of the year) Lucy was also so very proud of her recycled PET plastic bottle scarves and could not wait to show them to me to explain how and why she makes them in her North Wales Studio.  They are so soft and silky it is hard to believe they are made out of water bottles.

The process is so interesting.  Plastic bottles are collected cleaned and crushed.  The material is chopped, ground and washed to remove contaminates and turn into flakes.  The flakes are then melted and reformulated into resin.  The resin is again melted into liquid polymer and made into fiber.  From there the fiber is spun and air-jet textured into yarn which is then woven into scarves.

Lucy sees this has her little way to help the envirement.  By 2050, if nothing changes, plastic in the ocean will outnumber fish.

I was immediately captivated by her beautiful scarves, her passion for our planet and her lovely artwork.
My first order was placed immediately and I have been ordering ever since.

Many of the designs on Art on Scarves are inspired by the British countryside and coulture.  Lots of flowers, animals and natural design elements make up the themes on the fabric, along with a little bit of humor.  I was particularly smitten with the scarf design Wellies.  It shows all the farm animals wearing their wellies and I have to say I own one and wear it.

I am so excited to say we have ordered Lucy's newest scarves printed on pure silk.  These designes are some of the most beautiful yet and we hope to have them at Oxford Hall this fall.

Meanwhile Art on Scarves are available in our shop and the Plastic Bottle scarves are even on our website.
